International students from the Fo Guang University Chinese Language Teaching Center joyfully celebrated the Lantern Festival on March 3 with a special cultural experience class filled with laughter and warmth.
In a festive and welcoming atmosphere, students from Paraguay, Chile, and other countries gathered to take part in a hands-on tangyuan (glutinous rice ball) making activity. The event began with Director Hsu Sheng-Ho introducing the origins and symbolic meaning of the Lantern Festival, including traditions such as lantern viewing, riddle guessing, and eating tangyuan. Tangyuan represents reunion, harmony, and completeness in Chinese culture
During the DIY session, students eagerly kneaded sticky rice dough and rolled it into round, plump tangyuan by hand. They even cooked their own creations and enjoyed them with condensed milk, milk tea, and black tea provided by the center. The room was filled with laughter as everyone proudly tasted their handmade treats.
Many students shared that it was their first time making tangyuan. Through this cultural experience, they not only learned new vocabulary but also gained a deeper understanding of the meaning of “reunion” in Taiwanese and Chinese traditions
The Chinese Language Teaching Center expressed that it will continue organizing diverse cultural courses, allowing international students to learn Mandarin while experiencing the rich traditions of Taiwan — creating unforgettable memories along the way
